About the Artist

Arthur Edward Waite was a British occult scholar and writer whose vision helped shape the modern tarot tradition. In 1910, he collaborated with illustrator Pamela Colman Smith to create the Rider Waite tarot deck, aiming to make esoteric symbolism accessible to a wider audience. Waite’s guidance ensured that each card, including Temperance, conveyed clear spiritual messages for intuitive reading.

Though Smith executed the artwork, Waite’s symbolic direction defines the deck’s enduring influence. The Temperance card remains a touchstone for those interested in the history of tarot and the evolution of mystical imagery in early 20th-century Britain.

The Artwork

Temperance, a Major Arcana card, represents harmony, moderation, and the art of blending opposites. Created during a period of renewed fascination with mysticism and psychological symbolism, this card was designed to encourage self-reflection and balance. Its imagery invites viewers to contemplate the value of patience and gradual transformation in personal growth.

First published as part of the Rider Waite tarot deck in 1910, the Temperance card reflects the era’s interest in spiritual exploration and the integration of ancient wisdom into modern life. Its presence in a collection speaks to the ongoing appeal of tarot as both art and philosophy.

Style & Characteristics

The artwork features a serene angel in a flowing pale robe, pouring water between two cups, with one foot on land and the other in water—symbolizing equilibrium and connection between realms. The composition is direct and symmetrical, characteristic of early 20th-century print illustration.

Soft whites, gentle yellows, greens, blues, and touches of red create a luminous yet tranquil palette. The scene’s clarity and calmness make it a fitting choice for esoteric posters and thoughtfully curated vertical posters that bring a sense of peace to any space.

In Interior Design

This tarot poster lends a contemplative atmosphere to hallways, bedrooms, home offices, or reading nooks, grounding the decor with its symbolic meaning. Its timeless design complements modern, minimalist, or eclectic interiors, especially when paired with natural materials and soft lighting.

For a harmonious look, coordinate with pale walls and subtle blue accents, or highlight the warm tones with neutral textiles and brass details. The artwork appeals to vintage print collectors, tarot enthusiasts, and anyone seeking meaningful wall art that inspires reflection.
